The word "acre" originally meant a field - any field.  But in the reign of Edward 1 of England, an exact definition was set as the amount of land a team of oxen could plow in a day - 40 poles long by four broad, or 4,840 square yards, which is 43,560 square feet.  Therefore, a pole is 16.5 feet, which is the same as a rod.
